WRITING MANUSCRIPTS
We at SMW Consultants believe that writing a good manuscript is a demanding task. Nobody is an inborn writer of perfect manuscripts but this is a skill that develops only by practicing. Some people learn better than others, however, and this is shown by the unequal technical quality of the manuscripts. This is one of the reasons, why part of even high impact medical research never gets published, or is published in journals with limited access and prestige among the research community. In other words, if the writing is badly done, you have a high probability of loosing the edge of getting the manuscript accepted by the Editor of the Journal of your preference.
In other words, writing a good research report in English is very much all that matters. Together with the contents, of course.
In writing a research report, the best result is usually obtained when a single writer makes the first draft, to be distributed for commends, suggestions and amendments by the co-authors. The only think we cannot provide you are the research results; these you must produce with your research team.
The starting point of every medical research report is an idea: you have a set of results that you feel important enough to become shared with the research community. From this initial idea, a multitude of steps need to be taken until you will view your final report in a printed form, however. If you decide to minimise the time and effort needed to complete all these steps, you might prefer true experts to do all that for you. In that case, SMW Consultants is the right partner for you.
Working together with you, the completion of a typical original study report could proceed very much like this. Having received your raw data, together with a short description of your research idea, we get familiar with both and conduct the initial data analysis. At this stage, a comprehensive literature search is made, to establish a correct position and potentials of the results (unless you provide us the pertinent literature). These initial steps are followed by listing of the potential journals and selection of the most appropriate one for these particular data. Getting the Author Instructions is the next logical step.
There are several ways to complete the preparation of the manuscript, and the approach you select very much depends on personal preferences. A logical way to start is by completing the data analysis, selecting the mode of data presentation (Tables, Graphs, Figures), and then proceed by writing the entire Results section first. Then you know exactly what your report has to add to the existing literature, which makes it easier to write Introduction and Discussion. Usually Material and Methods section is more straightforward, and some people start writing the report from this.
When the manuscript looks finished, we will let you and your colleagues make your comments, suggestions and amendments in it, before typing the final version. Once this has been completed, you can select between two options: 1) to take care of the subsequent steps in submitting the manuscript yourself, or 2) to let SMW Consultants do the following for you:
In either case, we are convinced that your chances to get your manuscript published are certainly better than in case that you try to do everything by yourself. It is highly unusual, however, that any manuscript today will be accepted without any revisions. Doing that properly is sometimes more tedious than making the first writing.
